Pennsylvania Governor Corbett Supports Ban on Sexual Orientation Discrimination
Recently, Governor Tom Corbett publicly voiced his support Pennsylvania House Bill 300 and its counterpart, Senate Bill 300, which would ban discrimination based upon sexual orientation or gender identity in employment, housing, and public accommodation. The proposed bill would amend the Pennsylvania Human Relations Act to allow for special protections for members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (“LGBT”) community.
Thirty-three Pennsylvania municipalities currently have nondiscrimination laws that include sexual orientation and gender identity, but proposed bills have traditionally languished in the state legislature. Additionally, Congress has been unable to pass federal legislation addressing discrimination based upon sexual orientation or gender identity. Although the Employment Non-Discrimination Act was passed by the United States Senate in November of 2013, the House of Representatives has refused to take up a vote on this bill.
