James M. Lavelle

Senior Counsel

The powerful in our society must be fair and the vulnerable have to be protected.

With nearly 20 years of versatile experience, James M. Lavelle serves the firm’s criminal defense, municipal, and civil litigation clients. Having battled through significant challenges in his own life, he identifies with his clients and strives to provide optimal representation during their most difficult moments. He offers counsel in Carbon, Lehigh, Northampton, and Montgomery counties.

Jim began his career with Shutack & Lavelle in Carbon County, where he helped manage the firm and provided legal services for businesses and individuals. Additionally, he served as municipal authority solicitor and brokered favorable construction easement with the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission and its construction contractor.

From 2006-2012, Jim served as Assistant District Attorney for Carbon County, with a trial conviction rate of over 90% and prevailing in appellate matters before the Pennsylvania Superior Court. He managed more than 1,500 adult and juvenile cases, negotiating complex criminal dispositions with compassion and integrity. With a unique knowledge of all stages of the judicial process – Preliminary Hearings, Bail Hearings, Pre-Trial Hearings, Jury Trials, Bench Trials, Post Sentencing Motions, and Appeals – Jim is a strategic advocate for his clients in the courtroom.

During a relocation to the Greater Boston area, Jim worked in the financial services sector and provided pro bono services for indigent parties in Boston Housing Court and guardianships.

Just prior to joining Gross McGinley, Attorney Lavelle practiced law privately, representing clients in landlord tenant matters, contracts, employment discrimination, disability, qualified domestic relations orders, Wills, healthcare proxies, and corporate formation.

Within the community, Jim volunteers with the Philadelphia-based Gift of Life Donor Program, which promotes organ and tissue donation awareness and provides support and services for donor families and transplant patients.
